Dulbecco's modified media are widely used to support the growth of a broad spectrum of mammalian cells. It contains a four-fold increase in the concentration of the amino acids and vitamins found in Eagle's basal medium (BME). DME media were originally developed to be used with a serum supplement in a 10 % CO2-atmosphre for the cultivation of non-transformed mouse and chicken cells. In the medium, the concentration of vitamins and amino acids is compared to MEM four times higher and completed by non-essential amino acids (NEA), trace elements and bicarbonate.
The (1:1) mixture has improved levels of different nutrients through the contribution of Ham's F-12. It has found utility for the growth of a wide range of mammalian cells when supplemented with growth factors, hormones or serum (e.g. to grow human proteins such as erythropoetin).
Different from the original formulation, only 0.05 mg/l riboflavin is used to avoid negative photo oxidative effects.
